Maybe you can add weather and temperature, witch can affect how well pikmin work. To hot, cold, or humid, and pikmin will be sluggish. Extremely hot or cold temperatures could kill pikmin. However, some pikmin can be immune to weather types, and work more efficiently instead. I have ideas down below on what pikmin can be immune to what weather:
Red: Immune to hot weather, benefits from this
Yellow: Benefits from lightning storms?
Blue: Immune to humid weather, benefits from this
Purple: Windy weather?
White: ?
Rock: Immune to cold weather?
Winged: ?
(question marks are for ones I'm not for sure on)

This could be interesting. I don't think I'd implement this immediately, since it would need some figuring out (and having more maps to increase likelihood of weather effects would help).
Winged Pikmin would strike me as particularly vulnerable to windy weather, and also in rainy weather. I don't quite know what they would benefit from, although they seem bug-like, and bugs seem to enjoy humid areas... so perhaps they would benefit from humidity more than Blues? And outright rain would benefit Blues more...
Here's what I would consider:
Red: Can tolerate dry and hot temperatures, like heatwaves. Yellow: They benefit from the electric charges in the air during thunderstorms? (I'm no physician xD ) Blue: Benefits from rainy weather. Purple: More resistant to cold and perhaps wind? White: Not too sure... Rock: Not affected by most weather I would presume. Winged: Thrive in humid temperatures (say, the day after a rainfall)

I came up with an idea for white pikmin! Because they can see in the dark/underground, they can benefit from darker, cloudy days and not do so well on bright, cloudless days.
I like the idea for winged pikmin too! Can't wait to see this in action. Maybe we should do a beta test?

Yeah, that could work! The fact that light hurts their eyes, and that they have a pale coloration, could make them less capable of performing well in broad daylight... interesting idea!
How would we organize a beta test? I guess I could perhaps make a forum for games meant to test out new mechanics?

I would suggest a new board for beta tests. We could make a small, simple map for it to, just nothing to extravagant (like a plain circle or square)

Hm... before we start actually making tests, we should figure out how Pikmin are boosted and debuffed by weather ailments. I'd say a Pikmin in its favored environment would have a 50% boost to its speed, while being in an unfavorable environment would instead decrease its speed by 50%? As for attack, I'm not too sure how much I should boost their attack power. Maybe I could boost Pikmin attack by .3, which would make a Pikmin much likelier to get crits when attacking an enemy...
What do you think? Do those numbers seem a bit too much? Or not enough?

They seem fair to me. Being in an un-favored environment could have the same numbers, just have them subtracted. My oly fear is how slow purples will be in un-favored environments *shudders* ... so them being immune to most weather would defiantly help.

Ouch, yeah... purples would be horrible in unfavorable environments. Although I feel it would make sense for them to get exhausted quicker in hotter weathers (dry or humid, though I think humid would be worse)...
As for the testing board, how would we test the new mechanics? Just have a normal (but smaller) map to try it out in? Or just a sandbox kind of map where we test all the possibilities?

Hmmm.... A small sand-box sounds good to me, personally.
